Helping Communities Rise

Sustainable Health Clubs

Under the Smart Suds Project, RISE is hoping to encourage proper handwashing practices, hygiene behaviors, nutrition and exercise, and waste disposal practices. There have already been two successful Health Challenge workshops in Tema and Accra, Ghana, where participating school teachers and students in levels four and five benefited from the activities. Employing the innovative RISE activity manual, skits, songs, and games, RISE founders worked with the teachers and headmasters to facilitate active learning among the students. Activities included handwashing demonstrations with fun new songs, picture puzzles, malaria prevention and food contamination skits, and banana-peanut butter sandwich-making for lunch. Everyone enjoyed stepping up to the challenge, and many students are willing to continue these activities under the auspices of health clubs at their schools. RISE will be providing the completed version of the manual to the teachers to share with their students this fall. In the future, soap and sustainable soap-making kits will be donated to schools participating in the Health Clubs Initiative, as a complementary component of the Smart Suds Project.
